Medizen - Spring 2006 Newsletter

Hello and Welcome to the Medizen Newsletter for Spring 2006.

Sculptra® - The Art and Science of Sculpting

Sculptra® represents an exciting new option for the signs of facial ageing. Lines, wrinkles and sunken cheeks can all be improved and corrected with this unique procedure.

One of the subtle things that happen to most people as they age is a progressive loss in facial volume due to weakening of the facial muscles, fat loss in the cheek area and reduced firmness of the overlying skin. This can lead to the loss of the natural youthful curves of the face resulting in the ageing appearance of sunken cheeks.
Surgeons have used people’s own fat – taken from other parts of their body and carefully injected into the face to help restore a smoother more youthful contour.
Dr David Eccleston, has been evaluating Sculptra®
in our clinic over the last 6 months and comments:

“Sculptra®now provides a new option that, in many situations, is an even better solution than fat transfer for those people looking to not only restore facial volume but improve lines and wrinkles in the skin.”

Mrs J, Staffordshire;

“Prior to my Sculptra® treatments I felt that I looked tired and drawn. I now feel that my face looks brighter and plumper. The overall result is wonderful, and Sculptra® has helped to diminish my fine lines and put the lost volume back into my face, whilst also giving it a lift. Dr Eccleston talked me through the treatment step by step and along with the rest of the team, helped me to feel relaxed and comfortable. Friends keep commenting how well I look!”

BOTOX® (VISTABEL®) Granted License for Cosmetic Use

Allergan Ltd. (the manufacturers of BOTOX®) announced in March of this year that VISTABEL® (botulinum toxin type A) has been granted a licence for cosmetic use from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). BOTOX® for cosmetic use will be marketed in the UK under the brand name VISTABEL® and is the first and only brand of botulinum toxin type A licensed for cosmetic use in the UK.

“BOTOX® has proven to be an effective treatment option for minimising wrinkles between the brows, achieving a naturally refreshed and relaxed upper face rejuvenation that so many people are seeking today,” said Dr David Eccleston, Clinical Director of MediZen Ltd.  “The licensing of VISTABEL® reinforces that this is a product with an established safety profile with demonstrated benefits that result in high levels of client satisfaction.”

Since 1989, BOTOX® has been approved for 20 indications in more than 75 countries and is prescribed to patients who suffer from a range of serious or debilitating disorders, as well as to those with cosmetic needs.  Health authorities in some countries, including the MHRA in the UK, require that BOTOX® for cosmetic use be renamed to clearly distinguish between therapeutic and cosmetic use of the product.

MediZen have been a National training centre for over 5 years for Doctors and Surgeons wishing to learn how to use BOTOX®, and we have now been selected by Allergan as one of the few VISTABEL® training and revalidation centres in the UK.

You can rest assured that there is nowhere with more experience in the safe and effective use of botulinum toxin in the Midlands.

Botox® / Vistabel® – Price Changes for Dr David Eccleston

Due to increased prices for botulinum toxin imposed by the manufacturer following the license approval for cosmetic use, MediZen will be raising prices for Botox® /Vistabel® treatment for all clients of Dr Eccleston. Prices for a single area (i.e. frown lines) will be raised from £195 to £225 from 1st May 2006 and additional treatment areas will be charged at £110/area. Migraine/headache treatment prices will rise to £395.  Original prices will apply for all treatments booked BEFORE the end of April 2006 with Dr David Eccleston.

We have, however, decided to maintain prices for the rest of 2006 at £195 for one area for clients wishing to receive treatment from Anne Eccleston, our experienced nurse injector.

Anne is now treating clients with Botox® for Hyperhidrosis and for the reduction of wrinkles as well as providing a new dermal filler injection service with Hydrafill®, providing an alternative option for our clients who require more flexible booking options.

Hydrafill® Softline and Softline Max are examples of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, scars, and to help shape and add volume to thin lips.

Dermal fillers are made of various kinds of natural and man-made or synthetic materials that have been developed over the years for injection into the skin. As the use of these products has grown, so has the choice of different filler substances.
The leading dermal filler substance used by most
UK practitioners is a hyaluronic acid based product.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the spaces between the cells of body tissues in all animals. It has already been used widely in general medicine to help eye surgeons perform cataract operations, and for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement. It is estimated that over 30 million people around the world have been treated with some form of hyaluronic acid.

Restylane® is a well known brand of hyaluronic acid that has been available in the UK for the last 10 years, but we have selected a new brand called Hydrafill® (launched in 2004) which appears to give a softer result and also, more importantly, seems to cause less discomfort and bruising for our clients.

For more information concerning Hydrafill® please visit www.medizen.co.uk, or book a free consultation with Anne, our Nurse Practitioner, on 0121 308 4373.

 Skincare Facts vs Skincare Fiction

With the ever increasing array of ingredients and products claiming “anti-ageing” properties being promoted in Department Stores, Pharmacies, Beauty Salons, Spas and Specialist Clinics – it’s not surprising that many people are now confused about how to effectively protect and improve their skin using at home treatments.

Over the last few years, MediZen have carefully screened the scientific literature in order to select products that ONLY contain ingredients that are scientifically proven AND widely accepted by Cosmetic Dermatologists and Skincare Specialists worldwide. To help simplify this confusing area for our customers, we continue our series of articles focussing on key skincare ingredients and the evidence for their use with a look at Vitamin E.

What is Vitamin E?
Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) is the body’s most important lipid or fat soluble antioxidant. Its key biological function is to protect lipids from oxidation and free radical damage. Lipids are the building blocks of cell membranes and other important biochemical structures within the body.

As with any other vitamin, the complete lack of vitamin E in the diet is fatal. However, the minimum amount of vitamin E sufficient for basic health is so small that almost any diet has enough to prevent overt deficiency.

The predominant form of Vitamin E found in human and animal tissues is alpha tocopherol, and unlike Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) it is not an unstable molecule.

How can Vitamin E help my skin?
Vitamin E has been shown in clinical studies to promote healing of skin and help to protect skin cells against UV damage (from the sun) caused by the production of free radicals.

Vitamin E derivatives do not have the antioxidant effects of pure vitamin E (or alpha tocopherol), because they are not antioxidants. Cosmetic companies often misuse the term vitamin E, using it to refer to a derivative, thus confusing consumers. The best suggestion is to read the ingredient list and to know exactly what vitamin E really is: alpha tocopherol. While this is the only form of vitamin E the body can use, there are many derivatives that are used in cosmetic creams, and although they are not antioxidants vitamin E derivatives can be excellent emollients (an agent that can soften and smooth the skin).

Vitamin E found to work better when used in conjunction with Vitamin C
New breakthrough research shows a combination of vitamins C and E provides combined preventive and anti-ageing benefits to the skin. Scientific results prove that this combination is more effective at neutralizing the chemical reaction that causes premature wrinkling and other signs of ageing. Studies go one step further to show ultimate protection from UV damage when C + E are combined with a broad-spectrum sunblock. The most surprising discovery is its ability to prevent the mutations in skin cells associated with the formation of skin cancer.

SkinCeuticals C + E  Combines the benefits of Vitamin E with Vitamin C
Skinceuticals C+E FerulicAlthough evidence points towards additional benefits of combining Vitamin E with Vitamin C, until recently it was considered that this potent mixture of aqueous (water based) vitamin C and oil-based vitamin-E was impossible to combine in one bottle.

However, SkinCeuticals have utilized breakthrough technology to produce SkinCeuticals C + E  - a revolutionary antioxidant serum which for the first time ever combines a 15% concentration of stable L-ascorbic acid (vitamin-C) with a 1% concentration of pure vitamin-E (Alpha Tocopherol) to deliver superior protection against sun damage, while helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

SkinCeuticals now combine their Vitamin C products with Vitamin E AND Ferulic Acid to create the most powerful anti-oxidant combination currently available – more about Ferulic Acid in future newsletters!
