Over the last 10 years it’s been truly gratifying for members of the MediZen team who have been able to make such a difference to so many people’s lives across a wide range of different cosmetic concerns. They can be cosmetically embarrassing as well as cause problems when applying make-up or shaving or when they catch on clothing. There are many different types of moles or skin tags which can usually be removed with a simple in-clinic procedure that takes about 15 minutes or so. One simple method of removal is a treatment called cryosurgery (also known as cryotherapy) which utilises the freezing effect of Carbon Dioxide (in the form of dry ice) to selectively destroy the cells within the mole or skin tag. After treatment the lesion gradually shrinks and eventually disappears revealing smoother, flatter skin beneath. Dr Eccleston has many years experience in the use of cryosurgery in General Practice, and MediZen have recently invested in new cryosurgery equipment to take advantage of David’s skills and launch this new service. Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive procedure, and is often preferred to more traditional kinds of minor surgery using a scalpel because of its minimal pain, scarring, and cost. NEW “Quality Mark” for Clinics Offering Injectable Treatments to Launch in 2009
 The growth in the numbers of people undertaking non-surgical injectable cosmetic treatments reached record levels last year with some of these products now being featured in television adverts (some of you may recognise the adjacent image taken from the Juvederm advert). However, alongside the dramatic increase in numbers of treatments there has also been progressive lobbying of the Government by leading clinics and organisations including Which? Magazine to regulate the injectable aesthetic market, following an increase in publicity raising concerns about poor quality treatments and unsafe practice. As a result a new self-regulation scheme, planned for launch in early 2009, will help people buying injectable cosmetic treatments such as Botox® and dermal fillers to identify clinics operating to a new set of industry standards of best practice. Dr David Eccleston, our lead clinician explains: “With the increased popularity of injectable cosmetic treatments many new practitioners from different medical (and sometimes non-medical) backgrounds are now offering these procedures in a variety of different premises. Unfortunately, because these treatments have not been effectively regulated by the Government – standards of practice and safety vary enormously between different clinics. Training of practitioners is often inadequate, as can be the ability to deal effectively with rare, but sometimes serious side effects associated with these treatments. You can also find practitioners who are not licensed to prescribe and use prescription medicines, such as Botox®, happily offering treatments to customers. In addition MediZen have treated a number of people who have been disappointed with the results of “cut price” Botox® offered by some clinics, where the product has been “watered down” and therefore doesn’t last as long! We welcome the new standards in the hope that the proposed “Quality Mark” for clinics who demonstrate required levels of training, safe practice and appropriate promotion of injectable cosmetic treatments will help people to identify appropriate providers in the same way that anyone looking for someone to maintain their gas boiler should only consider a person who is CORGI registered!” If you have any questions concerning the new proposed “Quality Mark”please contact **NEW** – Collagen Induction Therapy for Acne Scarring using Medical Skin Needling

Right picture: Improvement in acne scarring after two treatment sessions Collagen Induction Therapy is a procedure which stimulates the skin to produce new collagen, thereby reducing wrinkles, scars and improving skin texture. The principle behind Collagen Induction Therapy treatment is simple. An anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the area to be treated and a roller with very fine needles is used to create many microscopic channels deep into the dermis (mid layer) of the skin, which stimulate your own body to produce new collagen. There are different types of devices ranging from models with a needle length of only 0.02mm designed for “at home” use to rollers with needles of 1.5mm designed to be used as a professional treatment by a trained practitioner. Dr David Eccleston, who has been evaluating these devices over the last 18 months comments: “Collagen induction therapy using medical needling has become an established treatment option that I am recommending more frequently because of its effectiveness, minimal downtime, ease of use, and levels of client satisfaction. Although we have focused most of our initial trial-use on scarring, medical needling has been used successfully to treat fine lines and wrinkles, lax and sun-damaged skin and to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
