Medizen - August 2005 Newsletter

Hello and Welcome to the Medizen Newsletter for August 2005.

NEW CLINIC – NEW SERVICES

Medizen Staff

We are delighted to announce that our new premises have enabled us to offer a much broader range of services, including clinically proven skin rejuvenating treatments, fat and cellulite reduction, body sculpting and hair removal procedures. We have recruited experienced staff and invested in a range of the latest medical aesthetic equipment; enabling us to provide solutions to most of our client’s rejuvenation needs.

Our new clinic is discreetly located on the first floor of Astor House at 282 Lichfield Road, Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield with ample parking spaces nearby.

NEW – INTENSE PULSED LIGHT TREATMENT FOR HAIR REMOVAL

Following an inspection by the Healthcare Commission (a Government organisation who inspects and approves medical clinics offering certain cosmetic treatments), MediZen have received a license to offer a new Intense Pulsed Light service for hair removal and skin rejuvenation.

Our inspection visit lasted all day and looked at all aspects of our service - from building safety to staff training and safety protocols. However, not all clinics offering Laser or Intense Pulsed Light services comply with Government legislation and some are operating illegally. If you are considering Intense Pulsed Light or Laser treatments, please ensure that the clinic gives you their “Healthcare Commission Registration Number” to ensure that they are registered and operating in a safe environment with trained practitioners.

We have invested in the latest Intense Pulsed Light equipment for the safe and effective removal of hair and the treatment of certain skin problems including thread veins and age spots.

EXPANSION OF OUR BOTOX® SERVICE

Most of you will know our very own “Botox® Guru”, Dr David Eccleston, who has been treating clients for over 6 years on behalf of MediZen. What many of you may not know is that David has trained more Doctors on the use of Botox® for both the treatment of Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and wrinkle reduction than any other person in the UK.

Due to increasing demands on Dr Eccleston’s time as an industry trainer, and the success of our new clinic, David’s clinics are becoming increasingly busy with the result that we cannot always secure the appointment date and time that our client’s request for treatment.

To help improve our services, Dr Eccleston has trained Anne Eccleston, who is a Registered Nurse and has worked alongside David in a number of his clinics over the last few years. Anne is now treating clients with Botox® for Hyperhidrosis and for the reduction of wrinkles and will provide an alternative option for our clients who require more flexible booking options.

For further information concerning our new services, please phone us on 0121 308 4373 and request an information pack.

50% OFF A COURSE OF LIPOCELL FOR THE REDUCTION OF CELLULITE

Cellulite is the name given to the lumpy, irregular fat deposits often found around the hips, buttocks and thighs.  It appears in 90% of post-adolescent women, even those who put a lot of effort into keeping their bodies slim and well toned, but is rarely seen in men.

Creams, body wraps, herbal preparations and even liposuction do not appear to be the answer; as a result, many manufacturers and clinics are still searching for a solution. MediZen has partnered with an innovative manufacturer to clinically evaluate a promising new medical approach, called the Lipocell; which uses a combination of non-invasive technologies to improve the appearance of cellulite.

Using microcurrents, the body's lymph nodes are first stimulated enabling them to work more efficiently to remove waste and toxins contained in the area affected with cellulite. For deep, hard or stubborn pockets of fat, ultrasound is used to provide a deep vibratory massage, loosening the compacted fat cells before the final vacuum dermo-mobilisation (VDM) process commences. VDM performs a number of functions; helping to reduce fluid retention; drain toxins and waste from the affected area; encourage blood flow to help promote healthy cell function, and to lengthen the connective tissue reducing the "orange peel" appearance of cellulite.

The treatment is relaxing and early results show that inch loss can be immediately measurable, however long term reduction in the appearance of cellulite is usually only achieved following a course of 8 - 15 treatments.

IN THE NEWS

Sun Warnings Confuse The Majority

Many people are confused by weather warnings designed to help them reduce their risk of developing skin cancer, research shows.

A poll for the charity Cancer Research UK found that more than 70% of those questioned do not understand the concept of the UV Index.  This is despite it regularly featuring on television weather forecasts. Over-exposure to sun can trigger malignant melanoma, which kills around 1,700 people in the UK each year.

The UV Index was developed by the World Health Organization as a way to describe the maximum strength of the ultra-violet radiation from the sun for a particular day. It is a more accurate indication of the potential for sunburn than the temperatures forecast each day. The Index ranges from one (the lowest) to 20 (the highest). However, it is rare for the Index to go above eight in the UK, so the upper limit used in UK forecasts tends to be 10. People with fair skin need to protect themselves from burning between 11am and 3pm on days with a lower UV Index rating, compared to people with darker skins, who are advised to cover up when the rating is higher.

Avoid Skin Cancer and Reduce Ageing of Your Skin:

·          Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm

·          Make sure you never burn

·          Use at least factor 15+ sunscreen to protect against UVB radiation

·          Use a sunscreen that also protects against UVA radiation

·          Promptly consult a doctor over mole changes or unusual skin growths

·          Keep children out of the sun

Skincare Facts vs Skincare Fiction

With the ever increasing array of ingredients and products claiming “anti-ageing” properties being promoted in Department Stores, Pharmacies, Beauty Salons, Spas and Specialist Clinics – its not surprising that many people are now confused about how to effectively protect and improve their skin using at home treatments.

Over the last few years, MediZen have carefully screened the scientific literature in order to select products that ONLY contain ingredients that are scientifically proven AND widely accepted by Cosmetic Dermatologists and Skincare Specialists worldwide. To help simplify this confusing area for our customers, we will run a series of articles over forthcoming newsletters focussing on key skincare ingredients and the evidence for their use.

Vitamin A (Retinol)
Research on Vitamin A – otherwise known as Retinol, and Retinoids (which are made from Vitamin A) has been conducted for nearly a century and has yielded comprehensive findings regarding the importance of vitamin A as a nutrient, that plays an essential role in vision, growth; the development and maintenance of healthy skin and hair; immune functions; and reproduction.

Early research on vitamin A (retinol creams) to treat skin conditions were not successful as retinol is very unstable and quickly degraded. Specific research on retinoids (more stable and derived from Vitamin A) has lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of a number of skin diseases including products for the treatment of acne and psoriasis.

The use of tretinoin (retinoic acid) for the improvement of sun-damaged skin was first described in the mid 1980’s by a Dermatologist who noticed improvement in fine lines around the eyes and improved skin colour in a patient who was using tretinoin for the treatment of acne. Since then, many clinical studies have proved that tretinoin can reduce the appearance of fine lines, lighten “age spots”, increase production of collagen in the skin and improve overall complexion. Tretinoin became the first prescription drug licensed for the treatment of “photodamaged” skin and is widely accepted by Dermatologists as having the most clinical evidence of any creams claiming to improve wrinkles.

Tretinoin (retinoic acid) therapy has always been somewhat of a double-edged sword, however. Users often love the results they get from using prescription tretinoin products (Retinova® or Retin-A) but side effects such as dry, flaky, reddened skin can occur, and we have found with some clients that these are sometimes severe enough that the person has no choice but to discontinue using it.

In recent years scientists have developed different retinoid products - these must all eventually be converted in the skin to active retinoic acid to help stimulate improvement in sun-damaged skin. Vitamin A (retinol), retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate and retinaldehyde are all examples of ingredients that you may now find in products marketed by many cosmetic companies today. However the rate of conversion of vitamin A into active retinoic acid varies significantly between different products used and among individuals using them. What does this mean in practice? Low strength topical vitamin A formulations are usually ineffective - not enough of the vitamin A is converted into a retinoid.

New, Stable, High Strength Retinol 0.5% & 1%

Retinol 1%

However, we have recently changed our minds with the launch of SkinCeuticals Retinol. Not only have SkinCeuticals produced this product in a stable form (which has been a long term problem in the successful use of Retinol), but they have produced two high strength versions (including a unique 1% retinol requiring a prescription from our Doctor) that get enough of the active product into the skin to be converted into retinoic acid which stimulates the beneficial effect. This has been proven in clinical studies where SkinCeuticals Retinol seems to be producing similar results to tretinoin; reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and blemishes - but with a much reduced potential for side effects. Early reports from our own clients are also confirming this and we are now actively recommending that our clients, (who have signs of sun damage) use Retinol instead of Tretinoin to improve their complexion and reduce wrinkles.

Note: Retinol should still be carefully used under the guidance of our skincare specialist and a UVA/UVB sunblock should always be applied.

In summary, SkinCeuticals Retinol:

  • Helps reduce appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, ages spots, blemishes, and blotchiness
  • Preserves optimal retinol stability and minimizes redness commonly associated with the use of retinol
  • Ensures maximum amount of retinol reaches the target site
  • Will not clog pores and eliminates the need of additional moisturizer
