What is the PIXEL Laser and how does it work?
A laser is a high-energy beam of light that can be directed into certain areas or tissues within the skin. These beams of light are produced in one wavelength or colour at a time, and can vary in terms of their strength and the type of tissue that they can target.
The process of directing a light source to target a selected area of the skin to damage it is technically known as "selective photothermolysis"; where “thermolysis” refers to ‘decomposition by heat’ and “photo” refers to ‘light’.
Unlike as seen with selective photothermolysis, where the whole of the selected target area is damaged; fractional photothermolysis seeks to only damage certain zones within the selected target area, hence only causing fractional damage through the heat of the light source.
The PIXEL laser fires a laser beam which is then split into many microscopic beams, producing tiny dot, or pixel-like treatment zones on the skin; sometimes referred to as MicroThermal Zones (MTZs).
These MTZs penetrate deep into the skin, destroying the old cells.
For every MTZ that the laser has targeted and therefore treated, it leaves the surrounding tissue unaffected and intact. This allows the skin to heal quickly creating new healthy tissue to fill in the damaged MTZs.
What happens during the treatment and how long will it take to recover?
Your first discussion with our specialist practitioner should clearly set out your expectations of the treatment and the practitioner should tell you whether or not these results are achievable using this method.
Your medical history will be taken, to ensure that there are no reasons why you shouldn’t have the treatment.
The practitioner will use a small hand piece to touch your skin with flashes of light in the area to be treated. Depending on the extent of the area to be treated, each session can take from a few minutes to half an hour.
Most people find that they can return to work immediately after treatment.
How safe is PIXEL Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Although the PIXEL laser effectively bores tiny holes in your skin, healing is quick with minimal to no downtime. The procedure can be used on both light and darker skin types and, depending on the area of your body treated; the procedure is very well tolerated with minimal or no pain.
For several hours afterwards the skin will feel tight and have the appearance of a “sunburned” look. The skin may continue to look “pinkish” for 5 -7 days and any swelling, which should be minimal, usually disappears after 1 – 3 days.
As the skin heals itself, you will find mild to moderate skin flaking, which may last for up to 2 weeks.
Who is not suitable for treatment with PIXEL Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Clients who are pregnant should not have treatment because of the hormonal and pigmentary changes that can occur during pregnancy. If you have a history of poor skin healing or have used isotretinoin in the last 6 months, you may also not be suitable for treatment with the PIXEL laser.
What results can I expect?
Clinical and research studies have proved that PIXEL Laser treatments can significantly improve skin texture, reduce roughness and pore size, reduce acne scarring, reduce some excessive skin pigmentation or age spots (including some melasma) and soften lines and wrinkles.
Treatment success varies from person to person and relies upon careful client selection, setting realistic client expectations and client compliance.
Depending upon the severity and extent of the skin problem that is treated, a course of three to five treatments every three to four weeks is normally recommended.
Occasionally we find that some clients require more than five courses of treatment and/or an occasional ‘top-up’ treatment once the initial course is completed.
