Tretinoin
Tretinoin is the only prescription skin cream licensed for the treatment of sundamaged skin and is, in our opinion, the best cream available to actually reduce wrinkles.
There are many hundreds of different types of skin care products on the market today that claim they can improve skin tone, reduce wrinkles, or the appearance of age spots, etc.
Many of these products are sold as “cosmeceuticals” which is a term that describes products that fall somewhere between cosmetics and drugs, with SkinCeuticals being one of the most effective cosmeceutical ranges that we stock and recommend to our clients.
Although SkinCeuticals provide an extensive range of skincare products that can actively help to prevent further skin damage, there are some limitations in improving more mature skin with established wrinkles. This is where a stronger, prescription strength product such as tretinoin may help.
What is Tretinoin and how can it help significantly improve your skin in the way that no other skin cream can?
Tretinoin is made from Vitamin A (which is also known as a “retinoid”). This product is best known as an anti-acne treatment. It was first used in the 1970s for this purpose, when some young and middle – aged women reported improvement in fine wrinkles around their eyes when they were using this product for facial acne.
As a consequence, strict medical trials were performed in the late 1980s that proved that tretinoin could indeed reduce the appearance of fine facial wrinkling and also reduce the appearance of some facial hyperpigmentation (or age spots). Tretinoin works by stimulating the production of collagen, which improves the skin’s appearance, and by also reducing the production of the pigment, melanin, in the skin. Although many, many skin creams claim to do similar things, tretinoin really does appear to stand "head and shoulders" above non-prescription skin creams in terms of effectiveness.
Above pictures show before and after improvement in forehead wrinkles after just 3 months of applying tretinoin cream.
How Safe is Tretinoin?
In medical trials, the only side effect to the cream was skin irritation. Mild to moderate skin reactions (e.g. dryness, peeling, redness, burning, stinging, and itching) are seen in many people when they start this treatment. If this occurs, clients are usually recommended to stop treatment for a few days, and then start treatment again with a tiny pea sized amount spread over the area to be treated. This product increases the risk of sunburn; so care should be taken (shade, sunscreen, etc.) to protect treated skin from overexposure to ultraviolet light.
How Should Tretinoin be Used?
Limit initial use to once or twice a week, gradually increase frequency to every other night, and finally each evening as tolerated. Apply a pea sized amount of Tretinoin to thoroughly cleansed skin in the evening. Carefully avoid the eyes and the corner of the eyes. To ensure optimal results, wait at least 30 minutes before applying any corrective or moisturising products the same evening as applying Tretinoin.
Summary
Tretinoin is a pharmaceutical product that is only available on prescription from a doctor or surgeon in the U.K.. Don't expect miracles! - but do expect slow gradual improvement in wrinkles and age spots over a period of months and years - this product really works if you continue to use it as instructed by our practitioners.
