SmartXide Fractional Resurfacing
Fractional Laser Resurfacing has caused a lot of excitement amongst practitioners trying to deliver the best skin rejuvenating results for more difficult to treat skin problems. At MediZen we have been using an erbium fractional laser called the PIXEL with some success since 2007. Our latest acquisition – the SmartXide laser, which is one of the very few systems available in Birmingham or the West Midlands - represents the very latest advance in lasers to more quickly and effectively treat wrinkles and age spots and improve skin texture without requiring significant recovery time.
What is SmartXide DOT Fractional Laser Resurfacing and How Does it Work?
SmartXide DOT is a fractional CO2 laser system. The laser works by creating literally thousands of microscopic perforations – or DOTS, which induce immediate skin tightening and stimulate new collagen growth, improving the skin’s texture and tone to fight fine lines and deep wrinkles, and even acne scars.
DOT Therapy leaves the skin around each of the perforations intact, which allows it to heal from the edge of these tiny holes very rapidly, promoting more rapid healing. What also sets SmartXide Dot apart from other treatments is that each treatment can be perfectly tailored to each person's skin-type, degree of damage, and their lifestyle which may dictate recovery time required from the procedure.
The result:
•Gradual smoothing of the skin's surface with a noticeable reduction in wrinkles and any acne scarring
•Reduction in persistent pigmentation problems including melasma
In order to maximise the results, clients should also adhere to the pre and post treatment skincare regime that will be individually prescribed for you.
What Results Can I Expect?
Clinical and research studies have proved that SmartXide Laser treatments can significantly improve skin texture, reduce roughness and pore size, reduce acne and other forms of scarring, reduce some excessive skin pigmentation (including melasma) and soften lines and wrinkles.
Treatment success varies from person to person and relies upon careful client selection, setting realistic client expectations and client compliance.
Depending upon the severity and extent of the skin problem that is treated, a course of two to five treatments every four to six weeks is normally recommended.
Some clients find that improvement after the final treatment can continue for up to 6 months before the optimum result is achieved.

What happens during the treatment and how long will it take to recover?
The practitioner will use a small hand piece to touch your skin with flashes of light in the area to be treated. Depending on the extent of the area to be treated, each session can take from a few minutes to half an hour. Recovery time depends on the area treated and your requirements. Also some people with more difficult problems will need more active treatment in order to achieve optimum results.
Most people find that they can return to work 2 -3 days following treatment, although recovery time may be longer for more difficult conditions requiring a more aggressive treatment program.
Does SmartXide hurt and what could go wrong?
Although the SmartXide laser effectively bores tiny holes in your skin, healing is generally quick with little downtime. The procedure can be used on both light and darker skin types and, depending on the area of your body treated; the procedure is very well tolerated, with pain being controlled with topical anaesthetic.
For several hours afterwards the skin will feel tight and have the appearance of a “sunburned” look and appear swollen – this may last for 2 -3 days.
The skin may continue to look “pinkish” for 5 -7 days and any swelling, which should be minimal, usually disappears after 1 – 3 days.
As the skin heals itself, you will find mild to moderate skin flaking, which may last for up to 2 weeks.
Who should not have SmartXide treatment?
Clients who are pregnant should not have treatment because of the hormonal and pigmentary changes that can occur during pregnancy. If you have a history of poor skin healing or have used isotretinoin in the last 6 months, you may also not be suitable for treatment with the SmartXide laser.
