Dermal Fillers – The Facts and My Experience at MediZen

A lot of stigma surrounds fillers with overdone lips and puffed out faces in the press constantly, not to mention some of the horrendous reactions that can happen when this procedure is performed by inexperienced practitioners. I have however had only good experiences with fillers and wanted to share this with you, along with a few facts that may well put your mind at ease and help you make good choices when deciding on a practitioner.
First of all, let’s address the fear that fillers are poisonous and full of chemicals, this is untrue! The most widely used brand in the UK is Juvederm who also produce Botox®. Juvederm is made of Hyaluronic acid which we had discussed on this blog before (see the blog on how moisturiser could be damaging your skin).
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule within our skin that holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water.

Look at those beautiful chubby cheeks!
Don’t worry I haven’t gotten sidetracked…babies have shed loads of Hyaluronic acid which gives them this beautifully soft and plumped out skin. Just as we make less collagen every year we also make less Hyaluronic acid, leading to a reduction in skin volume. Dermal Fillers work so well because they are very closely strung together Hyaluronic acid molecules, combined with lidocaine (for pain reduction) which draw moisture and plump out the area to give volume. This means you’re incredibly unlikely to have an allergic reaction unless you’re allergic to lidocaine.
So where can things go wrong? I came across this horrendous article in the Daily Mail where the client was blamed for an adverse reaction after receiving fillers at a beauty salon in Hornchurch. Unfortunately, this was a cheap procedure performed by a non-medic and the client was left with awful swollen lips.
As always, I would highly recommend going to a medically led clinic where they have experienced medical practitioners that have the correct knowledge of the anatomy of the face and can correct problems if (god forbid) things go wrong.

My cheek filler experience

If you follow the Skin & Shit Instagram account you probably would have seen my live video when I had my cheeks filled at MediZen the midlands premier aesthetic clinic. I had my procedure with Cathy who is a registered nurse with over 10 years experience.
Cathy was wonderful and talked through what I wanted with me fully before we got going. The area was cleaned prior to treatment and took only a few minutes. It involved 3-4 injections per cheek, each injection was a bit sharp but nothing too major.
The results were instant with my cheekbones looking more defined, my nose to mouth lines are lifted and my face just looks fresher in general.
These results will last between 9-18 months, my body will gradually break the Hyaluronic acid down at which point I can have the procedure done again.
I had a little bruise on my right cheek and felt a bit achy the next day but nobody else noticed.
2-weeks-post
This image is 2 weeks following the treatment and I have been left with ‘killer cheekbones’ as one of my clients commented!
I had no complications, but in the case that I did, I knew that I would be able to get back into MediZen to see Cathy who would have been able to advise me. In the worst case scenario, I would have been able to get Hyalase to dissolve the filler and this definitely put my mind at ease. The problem with non-medics is not necessarily that they can’t perform the treatment, it’s more that they don’t have the tools or knowledge to be able to deal with complications and this is why going to a medically led clinic is always the safest option!
