Blog > How to choose the right SPF for your skin How to choose the right SPF for your skin By Alex Watkins 7 min read 2nd August July is UV safety awareness month and at this time of year, many of us are much more exposed to UV rays from the sun. Choosing the right SPF for your skin is essential for effective sun protection and to prevent harmful UV damage. With so many options available, it’s confusing to know which one is best for you. Factors such as skin type, exposure level and specific skin concerns all play a role in determining the ideal SPF. Now is the ideal time to understand how to protect your skin from harmful sun damage this summer. In this guide, we’ll explore the key considerations for selecting the perfect SPF to ensure your skin is well-protected throughout the summer and beyond. What are UV rays? UV rays are an invisible type of radiation coming from the sun, sunbeds and sunlamps. The two most common types of UV rays which affect us are: UVA – These make up around 95% of the sun’s rays and penetrate deep into the skin. They contribute to almost all premature signs of ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles and worryingly cause some types of skin cancers. UVA levels remain relatively consistent throughout the year. Even on a cloudy day, 80% of the sun’s UVA passes through the clouds and reaches our skin. It’s worth noting that sunbeds primarily emit UVA rays. UVB – This type of UV makes up only around 5% of UV rays from the sun, but they are extremely high energy. UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn, thickening of the skin and several types of skin cancers, including melanoma. They damage the skin cells and can cause many issues. In the UK, almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer could be prevented by staying safe in the sun and avoiding sunbeds. The risk of developing melanoma increases by 75% if you start using tanning beds before the age of 35. Not sure what sunscreen you should be using? SPF values measure how much sunscreen can protect you from sunburn. For example, if you applied an SPF 30 sunscreen, it would take 30 times longer for your skin to begin to burn than if you had no sun protection on. You should always be using an SPF of at least 30 and over. It’s important that you choose a sunscreen which protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Some products may only protect you from UVB rays. We recommend looking out for sunscreens labelled as ‘broad spectrum’. These will protect you from both types of UV rays and provide your skin with maximum protection. Finding the right sunscreen for you There is a wide range of face and neck SPF products on the market. These should be used every day under make-up (no matter the weather) to protect your skin. Our go-to face products: AlumierMD clear shield – this is a hydrating SPF which doesn’t leave a white cast. A great product for those with drier or more sensitive skin. Obagi tinted SPF – these are ideal for holidays or those who prefer some coverage with their SPF. They can be used instead of foundation or BB creams but still provide the required protection. Heliocare’s targeted SPF range – Heliocare has created a wide range of SPF products. They are specifically targeted at individual skin concerns such as acne, pigmentation and rosacea. The formulas have been created to provide the perfect SPF for those with specific skin concerns who can often struggle to find an SPF that suits them. Body sunscreen is vital for the summer months in the UK or holidays abroad. There is a vast range of high street and drugstore SPF products. Remember to look for broad spectrum, SPF 30 and above for maximum protection. Our go-to body products: Heliocare invisible spray – This product is a firm favourite of ours! An aerosol SPF 50+ spray which absorbs quickly with an invisible, non-oily finish. It is water resistant and effective on wet skin – so perfect for when you jump out of the pool! It’s suitable for all types of skin and its easy spray application ensures even coverage. Body Glow – Want to look glowing and bronzed this summer but still want that broad spectrum SPF 50+ protection? That’s where Heliocare’s Body Glow is the ultimate holiday product! The oil-gel textured product is suitable for all skin types and is quick to absorb, leaving no greasy residue. Its unique formula is infused with shimmering particles and moisturising agents for hydrated skin with the ultimate sun-kissed glow. SPF for young skin Young skin is much more sensitive and therefore is more at risk of being damaged by UV rays. Just five sunburns can double your risk of developing melanoma so using sunscreen from a young age is vital in reducing the risk of skin cancer. There are lots of child-friendly sunscreens out there but remember to look for broad spectrum SPF 30 or above. For our patients with children, we always recommend the Heliocare paediatrics range. This includes both a face SPF and a body spray, specially formulated for young, sensitive skin. How else can you protect yourself from UV rays and reduce your risk of skin cancer? Although we can feel heat, we cannot feel UV rays. So, it is important to check the UV index and keep in mind that if it’s 3 or more, you are still at risk of burning no matter the weather. Avoid being out in the sun when UV rays are at their highest intensity. This is usually between 11 am and 3 pm. Cover up where possible, wear clothing that protects your skin and wear wide-brimmed hats and UV sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when in direct sunlight, or immediately after swimming.
