Who are anti-wrinkle injections for?

Most people who ask about anti-wrinkle injections have watched the same few expressions leave a mark. The horizontal lines that gather across the forehead when you raise your brows. The vertical crease between the eyebrows that friends read as tiredness or irritation you do not feel. The crow’s feet that once vanished the moment you stopped smiling and now linger. If you want those softened so you look refreshed rather than remade, this is the treatment that does it.

Our Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield patients most often come in for one or more of these:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the brows, the vertical elevens
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Bunny lines across the nose
  • A gummy smile or a downturned mouth
  • A dimpled or pebbled chin
  • Fine lip lines and soft neck bands
  • A gentle brow lift
  • Jaw tension and teeth grinding
  • Excessive sweating of the underarms, palms or feet

What they will not do

It is only fair to say what these injections will not do. They relax movement, so they cannot refill cheeks or lips that have lost volume. That is where dermal fillers come in. They will not resurface sun damage, texture or dullness. Lines etched deeply enough to show even when your face is completely still may soften rather than disappear. For the quality of the skin itself, treatments such as Profhilo or polynucleotides do more. The treatment is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. A small number of medical conditions also rule it out. That is exactly what the consultation is for.

Because this is a prescription-only medical treatment, every plan begins with a face-to-face medical assessment. You will see one of our doctors or nurses. We review your health history and watch how your face actually moves. We only go ahead when it is genuinely right for you. You can have that assessment at our Birmingham clinic in Sutton Coldfield.

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

The idea behind anti-wrinkle injections is simple, and understanding it takes the mystery out of the treatment. A very small, measured amount of a prescription-only, MHRA-licensed medicine is used. It is placed into the specific muscle that folds the skin above it. That muscle relaxes and eases its pull. So the skin creases far less when you frown, squint or lift your brows. The lines on the surface then soften over the following days. The effect is temporary by design. Movement returns gradually, usually across three to four months. That is why the result reads as a natural softening rather than a permanent change.

Precision is the whole point. Only the muscle your practitioner treats is relaxed. So the muscles around it keep working normally, and your expressions stay your own. There is a real range of licensed products on the UK market. The right one is a medical decision made at your consultation, not a choice from a menu. MediZen offers several of the most established brands. This is doctor-led aesthetic medicine rather than a beauty add-on, which is why it belongs in a properly regulated clinic. The standards behind that care are set out by bodies such as the British College of Aesthetic Medicine.

What a natural result looks like

The brief patients bring to the desk rarely changes. People do not want to look done. They want to look like themselves on a good morning. Getting there is about restraint. It is about knowing precisely which muscle to treat and how little to use. That is the discipline behind every doctor-led injection at MediZen under Dr David Eccleston.

You will not walk out transformed, and you are not meant to. The first softening tends to show at three to five days. The full result settles by around two weeks. It then holds for roughly three to four months before movement, and the lines, slowly return. Many patients come back three to four times a year. Having the treatment regularly can also keep those lines from deepening in the first place, with many people using this treatment as a prevenative measure.

Crow's feet, frown lines and the areas we treat most

The three areas people ask about most sit in the upper face, and they are where anti-wrinkle injections work best. Horizontal forehead lines that deepen with every raised brow. The vertical frown lines between the eyebrows that can make you look cross or worried when you are neither. Crow’s feet fanning from the corners of the eyes. Treated with a light hand, these settle so your face still moves freely. They just avoid carving the same lines each time you smile.

The list runs longer than most people expect. We treat bunny lines across the nose and lift a heavy brow a fraction. We ease a gummy smile, soften a downturned mouth and a dimpled chin. We also smooth fine lines above the lip and relax the vertical bands on the neck. For patients who grind their teeth or carry a strong, square jaw, relaxing the jaw muscles can ease tension. Over a few months, it can also gradually slim the jaw line.

The same medicine has genuine medical uses beyond wrinkles. It can quieten the overactive nerve signals behind excessive sweating of the underarms, palms and feet. It can also help some patients with frequent migraines. And it calms the jaw clenching that wears teeth down overnight. If underarm sweating is your main concern, you may prefer not to repeat treatment every few months. For that, miraDry offers a long-term route. Your practitioner will talk you through both at your consultation.

Anti-wrinkle injections vs dermal fillers: which do you need?

People often arrive certain they need one and leave booking the other. That is because anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are easy to confuse. Both are injectables, both are doctor-led at MediZen, and both soften the signs of ageing. Yet they work in opposite ways. One relaxes movement. The other restores volume. Here is an honest side by side so you can see which suits the lines you are looking at. It also shows whether a combination of the two makes more sense. You can read more on our dermal fillers page.

Your journey

What to expect at your appointment

01
Your consultation
Every treatment starts face to face with one of our doctors or nurses, never a rushed sign-up. We go through your full medical history. We look closely at how your face moves and where the lines actually sit. We also talk honestly about what the treatment can and cannot do for you. You leave with a clear plan, the price for your areas and no pressure to have treatment on the day. Because this is a prescription-only medicine, that assessment is a legal requirement, not a formality.
02
Before your appointment
A little preparation protects your result. Skip active skincare such as retinols and AHAs for three to five days beforehand. Also avoid alcohol for the twenty-four hours before, since it can make bruising more likely. If you are prone to cold sores, let us know, as an antiviral may be advised. Come with clean, makeup-free skin if we are treating your face.
03
During your treatment
On the day, your practitioner talks you through everything again. They confirm your medical history and take clinical photographs for your records before you sign your consent form. You then settle back on the couch while a series of tiny injections are placed with a very fine needle. Most people describe no more than a quick sting, and the whole thing is usually over in a few short minutes.
04
Aftercare and results
Your personalised aftercare arrives in your confirmation email. Stay upright for a few hours, keep the area clean and leave it alone. Also avoid heavy exercise, saunas and facials for the rest of the day. Any tenderness or small bruise fades quickly. The softening begins within a few days and looks its best at around two weeks. We will see you again when you are ready to top up, usually every three to four months.

“The most amazing clinic, I used to see Dr Eccleston years ago but moved out of the area, I’ve been to so many clinics and wasted thousands with poor injectors and doctors, I’ve now decided to travel to MediZen and I’m so happy I have, it’s the most natural treatment, you can’t tell I’ve had anything done (unlike many other treatments I’ve had) I’m over the moon, can not recommend them highly enough!”

Anti-Wrinkle Injection FAQs

Still weighing up anti-wrinkle injections in Birmingham? These are the questions our patients ask most about the treatment itself, from safety and comfort through to how long it lasts. For questions about a specific area, or what it costs, see the section just below.

In trained hands they have a long and reassuring safety record, which is part of why they are one of the most performed medical aesthetic treatments in the world. At MediZen every treatment is planned and given by a doctor or nurse, and we are registered with the Care Quality Commission. Serious problems are rare when the person injecting genuinely understands the anatomy, and Dr Eccleston is a national complications expert who trains other practitioners in exactly that.

No, and if anyone left our clinic looking frozen we would not have done our job. The treatment only relaxes the specific muscle we inject, so the muscles around it keep working and your expressions stay yours. A natural softening has always been the goal at MediZen. Most patients tell us people say they look well, rather than asking what they have had done.

Very little. The needle is extremely fine and each injection takes a second, so most people compare it to a tiny pinch or scratch. No anaesthetic is needed, and the whole appointment is usually finished inside a few minutes.

The first change tends to show at three to five days, with the full effect settling by around two weeks. From there it lasts roughly three to four months before movement gradually returns and the lines begin to come back. Most patients keep results looking their best with a visit two or three times a year.

Lines form where a muscle repeatedly folds the skin above it. A small, measured dose of a prescription-only medicine relaxes that muscle so it eases its pull, and the skin on top creases far less. The effect is temporary and wears off on its own as the muscle slowly wakes up, which is why the treatment is topped up over time rather than being permanent.

Yes, always. Anti-wrinkle injections rely on a prescription-only medicine that can only be prescribed after a face-to-face medical assessment with a doctor or nurse, so we will not treat anyone without one. It is how we confirm the treatment is safe for you, choose the right product and agree exactly which areas to treat.

Downtime is minimal, and most people head straight back to work or the school run. Side effects are usually limited to a little tenderness, redness or the occasional small bruise at an injection point, all of which settle quickly. We will ask you to stay upright and skip strenuous exercise, saunas and facials for the rest of the day.

A doctor or nurse, every time. Every injector at MediZen has been trained personally by Dr David Eccleston, so whoever you see has the anatomical knowledge and the light touch to give subtle, natural results. That is the difference doctor-led care makes.

Yes, and most patients get their best results by doing exactly that. Because these injections only address muscle movement, they pair naturally with treatments that improve the skin itself, such as Profhilo, micro-needling and a HydraFacial. Your practitioner can build a plan that layers muscle, volume and skin quality over time.

No. We do not treat anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, because there is no safety data to support it and we will always err on the side of caution. If you are trying to conceive, mention it at your consultation and we can plan around your timings. There is plenty we can do for skin quality in the meantime that is entirely pregnancy-safe.

A little groundwork protects your result. Skip retinols and acid exfoliants for a few days beforehand, and leave alcohol alone for the twenty-four hours before your appointment, since it makes bruising more likely. Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin, and if you are prone to cold sores let us know so we can advise on an antiviral. Nothing about the preparation is onerous.

For the rest of the day, stay upright, keep the treated area clean and resist rubbing or massaging it. Give heavy exercise, saunas, steam rooms and facials a miss until the following morning. These simple steps keep the medicine exactly where your practitioner placed it, and any small bruise or tenderness settles within a day or two.

One appointment treats your chosen areas, and you see the full result within about two weeks, so there is no course to complete. Because the effect is temporary, most patients return two or three times a year to keep movement, and the lines, gently in check. Treating regularly can also stop those lines from deepening over time.

For softening the lines that expression carves into the upper face, few treatments give a more reliable return for the outlay. The change reads as looking rested rather than altered, and it holds for three to four months. Many patients pair it with a skin treatment such as Profhilo so the surface looks fresher while movement is relaxed, which makes the overall result feel more complete.

The two are often confused, yet they do opposite jobs. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that fold the skin, so they suit dynamic lines from frowning and squinting, while dermal fillers add volume and support where the face has thinned or hollowed. Some concerns call for one, some for the other, and plenty of patients benefit from a little of both. Your practitioner will tell you honestly which your lines actually need.

Yes, and a growing number of our Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield patients are men. Male muscles are typically stronger, so the dosing is tailored accordingly, and the aim is the same, a softer and less tired look that still moves naturally. Frown lines and forehead lines are the areas men ask about most.

By concern

Anti-wrinkle injections for your concern and costs

Wondering whether anti-wrinkle injections are right for your particular concern, or what they cost in Birmingham? These are the questions we hear most about individual areas such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, under-eye lines and excessive sweating, along with pricing and combining treatments.

The classic three are the forehead, the frown lines between the brows and the crow’s feet around the eyes. Beyond those we treat bunny lines on the nose, a gummy smile, a downturned mouth, a dimpled chin, fine lip lines, neck bands and a heavy brow, and we can relax a strong jaw for people who grind their teeth. Your consultation is where we map out which areas will make the difference you are after.

Crow’s feet are one of the most rewarding areas to treat in Birmingham. Relaxing the small muscle that fans out from the corner of the eye softens those lines when you smile while leaving the rest of your face fully expressive. Most people see the change within two weeks and keep it up two or three times a year.

Sometimes, though the under-eye area needs care and it is not always the right tool. The skin there is thin, and the lines are often about crepiness and lost firmness rather than muscle movement, which respond better to polynucleotides. We will look properly and tell you honestly whether relaxing injections, a skin treatment, or a combination of the two will serve you best.

They can help a great deal. Placed into the underarms, palms or soles, the same medicine calms the overactive nerve signals that trigger heavy sweating, with results that typically last several months. If you would prefer a longer-term solution for underarm sweating specifically, miraDry is worth discussing at your consultation.

Yes. Relaxing the powerful chewing muscles at the side of the jaw can ease the clenching and grinding that wear down teeth and cause morning jaw ache, and over a few months it can also soften a very square jawline. It is one of the treatment’s most useful medical crossovers.

Treatment starts from £235, with the final price depending on how many areas you have done. You can spread the cost from £38 a month, and our anti-wrinkle packages offer better value for regular patients. The full breakdown lives on our price list.

Not for cosmetic reasons. When lines and wrinkles are the concern the treatment is considered aesthetic and is offered privately, which is what we do here. The NHS does publish clear guidance on what to check before any cosmetic procedure, and it is worth a read before you book anywhere.

There is no single right age. Some patients start in their late twenties to keep early lines from deepening, a preventative approach, while others come later to soften lines that are already established. What matters is your skin and your goals, not a birthday, and the honest answer comes from your consultation.

They work best on lines caused by movement, so a crease that only appears when you frown responds beautifully. A line etched deeply enough to show when your face is completely still will soften rather than vanish, and it often needs support from another approach. For static lines and lost firmness, polynucleotides or a resurfacing treatment tend to do more, and we will map out the right combination at your consultation.
