What are the different types of acne?

Around 80% of the population are affected by acne concerns at some point in their life. Contrary to popular belief, this common skin condition does not just affect teenagers with raging hormones. Adults for whom puberty is a distant memory can also experience acne concerns.

Mild acne is usually defined as having occasional minor breakouts. These consist mostly of whiteheads and blackheads with a few papules (small red bumps) and pustules (bumps that contain fluid).

Moderate acne consists of more widespread blackheads and whiteheads with many papules and pustules.

In cases of severe acne you might notice lots of large painful papules, pustules, nodules and  sometimes even cysts. With this type of acne it’s very common to also experience scarring.

Acne Treatments Birmingham

Is acne negatively impacting your confidence? MediZen is here to help you feel your most confident self again. We provide a range of treatment options for any type of acne. Our practitioners will work with you to find the most suitable treatment plan for your exact concerns. Below, you can learn more about some of our most recommended treatments.

What can I do about my acne?

Try not to pick or squeeze your spots as this usually aggravates them and may cause scarring and infections.

If your self-confidence has been affected by acne or if you are feeling distressed, it is important to reach out for support. This includes friends, family members and support groups.

Let your doctor know if your acne is making you feel depressed or anxious. They will be able to speak with you about how you are feeling and help you to form a treatment plan, which may involve input from other specialists, such as psychologists or psychiatrists, if necessary.

However your acne affects you, it is important to take action to control it as soon as it appears. This helps to avoid permanent scarring and reduces embarrassment. If your acne is mild, it is worth trying over-the-counter preparations in the first instance. Ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can be helpful, your pharmacist can advise you.

Expect to use your treatments for at least two months before you see much improvement. Make sure that you understand how to use them correctly so that you get the maximum benefit.

Some topical treatments may dry or irritate the skin when you start using them. If your face goes red and is irritated by a lotion or cream, stop treatment for a few days and try using the treatment less often and then building up gradually.

Make-up may help your confidence. Choose products that are labelled as being ‘non-comedogenic’ (should not cause blackheads or whiteheads) or non-acnegenic (should not cause acne).

We have a range of effective treatment options available no matter the severity of your acne. Get in touch with us today to book a consultation and discuss your options.

FAQ

We’re here to help

Depending on your individual skin needs, we can provide a variety of treatment methods for acne. During your initial consultation, the doctor will discuss your concerns and advise on a suitable treatment plan. For long-term clearance of acne with minimal side effects, we recommend AviClear, our laser acne treatment. Alternatively, we can offer prescription acne medication. We also offer a range of other treatments, suitable for mild to moderate acne.

Acne scars are often stubborn to treat, however, we do have treatments available to improve their appearance. Our most effective acne scarring treatment is CO2 laser combined with radio-frequency micro-needling. We can also provide you with medical grade skincare products for at-home treatment. Before we start to treat your scarring, it’s important we get your acne under control. The most suitable treatment for your skin will depend on the type of acne scarring you have and your specific skin type.
