Here’s how we can Restore Your Confidence By Alex Watkins 7 min read 29th November Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition affecting around 5% of the population globally and roughly one million people across the UK. November marks Hyperhidrosis awareness month so we’re here to explain what it is, explore the impact it can have and recommend our top treatments to help you live a life sweat free. What is Hyperhidrosis? Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where a person sweats excessively due to overactive sweat glands. It has no known or obvious cause and can affect men and women of all ages. Although excessive sweating can occur on any area of the body, hyperhidrosis is most common under the arms, on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. What is the Psychological Impact? For most suffering with hyperhidrosis, the condition affects their everyday life. Sufferers can’t: • Wear certain types or colours of clothing • Have to change their clothes multiple times a day • Shower more than once a day, avoid shaking hands with people • Ultimately avoid many social situations for fear of embarrassment. Even though hyperhidrosis doesn’t pose any specific health risks, it can often cause depression and anxiety for those suffering. What is the Difference Between Sweating Normally and Hyperhidrosis? Many of us will sweat when it’s hot, when we’re exercising, when we’re stressed or anxious. The difference between this and hyperhidrosis is that those affected will sweat excessively no matter the temperature or their environment and they are unable to regulate or control their sweating. If you find you can’t control your sweating and sweat in circumstances that others maybe wouldn’t, you could have hyperhidrosis. The good news is that treatments are available, you don’t need to struggle anymore. Home solutions If sweating is a new concern for you, we always recommend trying different types of antiperspirants or armpit shields to begin with. We would encourage you to wear breathable clothing where possible and keep a track of any triggers. There are some effective options to try before moving on to consider in clinic treatments. In Clinic Treatments If you’ve tried home remedies and nothing seems to be working or making a big enough impact, here are some in clinic treatments to reduce your sweating: Injections We are able to use injections for areas such as the hands, feet, scalp and underarms which effectively helps to reduce sweating. The way this works is by blocking the nerve signals which are responsible for the sweating. This in turn stops the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. Most patients will find this treatment to be around 80% effective and it can last anywhere between 4 and 12 months. We recommend going to see an experienced medical professional for these injections as they will have the knowledge and experience to provide effective results, whilst ensuring you receive a safe treatment. miraDry miraDry is the only FDA-cleared treatment for a permanent reduction in underarm sweating. This treatment is non-surgical, pain-free, permanent and offers an immediate reduction in underarm sweating after just one 60-minute treatment. It offers an 82% average reduction in underarm sweating and for most people, it doesn’t need repeated. miraDry is currently only licensed for use on the underarms, but it is extremely effective and has changed the lives of so many of our patients. This revolutionary treatment allows thousands of people every year to begin living their lives sweat free! Don’t believe us? Here’s some of our very own patients’ reviews after having a miraDry treatment with us: Beth “As someone who has experienced hyperhidrosis for over 10 years and since having the miraDry treatment at MediZen, there has been a massive difference physically and mentally in relation to my self-confidence and I am no longer anxious about social events. All the staff at MediZen were very welcoming, understanding and helpful. They were not judgemental when discussing why I wanted the treatment and thoroughly spoke through the MiraDry treatment, how this will work and look for me and provided thorough support during my aftercare. I would highly recommend MediZen for anybody looking at the MiraDry treatment.” AnnMarie “My daughter traveled from Glasgow for the Miradry treatment and so impressed with the quality of treatment and care given I booked to have some spider vein treatments on my legs. This practice will not sell you things you don’t need nor will they conveyor belt people through. An honest evaluation of what the outcome could be, mixed with excellent expertise on the equipment plus excellent treatment they give, made us drive a 12 hour round trip. Cannot find this same level of care in Glasgow. The practice is pristine ,immaculately clean and the staff are welcoming and very friendly.” Gavin “Mira-Dry procedure…….I was skeptical before the procedure but the results of this are amazing. I’m so glad I had the procedure and all the staff at Medizen made me feel so relaxed. Cannot recommend it enough :)” Hyperhidrosis Treatment at MediZen If you, or anyone you know is suffering from excessive sweating, please get in touch with us today to discuss your options and book a consultation.
