MediZen has been clearing unwanted hair for people across Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield for years. The story new patients tell tends to be the same one. It is a lifetime of razors, wax strips and ingrown bumps, and a quiet wish to stop for good. Laser hair removal is how our team ends that cycle.
Dual-wavelength laser hair removal, run by MediZen's experienced laser team across Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield.
per treatment
Picture the patient who has tried everything. Epilators that sting, wax appointments booked around holidays, a bathroom drawer full of half-used razors. That is who laser hair removal in Birmingham is built for. It suits you if you want unwanted hair genuinely reduced rather than managed week to week. It also works across almost every area people ask about.
The treatment works the same way for men and women. A large share of our male patients come in for the back, chest and shoulders. Others come to tidy a beard line that grows too low on the neck. Sometimes hair growth is heavier than you would expect. This can be driven by a hormonal condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Even so, the laser can still make a real difference over a course. You may just need a few extra sessions. You can read more about excessive hair growth on the NHS hirsutism page. We will assess what is realistic for you at your consultation.
It is only fair to say who the laser is not for. Because it targets the pigment in the hair, it does its best work on dark hair against lighter skin. Blonde, red, grey and white hairs hold too little melanin to respond well. Recently tanned or sunbed-exposed skin has to wait four to six weeks. Fake tan needs about two weeks to fade first. We also never pass the laser directly over a tattoo. None of this catches anyone out on the day. Every plan opens with a consultation and a patch test at our Birmingham or Sutton Coldfield clinic.
So what is actually happening when the laser passes over your skin? The light is absorbed by the melanin inside each hair. It travels down the shaft to the follicle. There it heats the follicle enough to disable its ability to grow. The treatment only affects follicles in their active growth phase. So a course spaced over several weeks catches more of them each time. That is why one session thins the hair and a full course clears it.
The reason MediZen chose a dual-wavelength system matters. The Alexandrite beam at 755nm is quick and efficient on finer, lighter-brown hair near the surface. The deeper Nd:YAG wavelength at 1064nm reaches coarser follicles. It is gentle enough with surrounding pigment to treat darker skin tones safely, which many older IPL machines cannot claim. An integrated cooling device blows chilled air onto the skin after every pulse. So the treatment stays comfortable from start to finish. Anyone wanting a plain-English overview of laser hair removal will find the NHS covers the basics well. What a good clinic adds is judgement, matching wavelength, energy and cooling to the skin in front of it.
At MediZen, one rule holds firm. Nothing touches a patient’s skin without a proper consultation and a trained pair of hands behind the laser. All of this sits under the clinical direction of Dr David Eccleston, the clinic’s founder and clinical director. Hair removal can look simple from the outside. Yet skin tone, hair colour and follicle depth must be read correctly. That is what separates a safe, lasting result from a disappointing one.
Shaving and waxing often leave marks of their own. These can be the flush of irritation or the brown spots ingrown hairs leave behind. Once the hair is gone, some patients ask us to even out that lingering redness or pigmentation. That is where our excel V+ laser comes in. Your practitioner can tell you whether that is worth adding once your course is underway.
Some people book one small area and never look back: an upper lip, an underarm, a bikini line. Others want the lot. Full body laser hair removal in Birmingham is one of our most requested packages. Folding several areas into a single appointment usually works out kinder on both time and cost than treating them piecemeal.
Underarms are a good example of how treatments stack. The patients lasering the hair away are often the same ones tired of sweat patches. Our miraDry treatment tackles that in exactly the same part of the body. Faces are another common request, from a couple of stubborn chin hairs to a full jaw and neck. Because the sessions are short, they slot easily into a lunch break in the city centre.
Smooth skin tends to make people want the rest of it to glow too. We often pair a finished course with a HydraFacial so the skin looks as good as it now feels. There is no obligation to add anything. Your practitioner builds the plan around your body, your hair and your diary rather than a fixed template. They review it as your results come through at our Sutton Coldfield clinic.
Almost everyone weighing up laser hair removal has also read about IPL. The two get talked about as if they are the same thing. They are not. IPL sends out broadband light that scatters across many targets at once. The laser MediZen uses is a focused beam tuned to the hair follicle. Here is an honest side by side so you can choose with your eyes open.
“I’ve been attending MediZen for a few months to have laser hair removal, I’ve always found the staff to be very welcoming and friendly. The actual treatment itself is fantastic, I suffer with Policystic Ovaries which means I get excessive hair, since having only 3 sessions so far, I can really tell a difference and I get complemented on my skin so much! Best thing I ever did and would HIGHLY recommend!”

Every course begins with a consultation and a patch test. So the plan and the price fit your skin and your hair rather than a one-size figure. Single areas start from £99 a session. Because most people need six to eight sessions six weeks apart, we offer memberships from around £90 a month. These help spread the cost of a full course. Larger and combined areas are quoted at your consultation. You can see everything we offer on our full price list, or ask about our laser hair removal memberships.
Still weighing up laser hair removal in Birmingham? These are the questions our patients ask most about the treatment itself, from comfort and hair colour through to sessions, tanning and downtime. For questions about a specific area or what it costs, see the section just below.
Most people find it far more comfortable than they expect. You feel a warm flick against the skin, similar to an elastic band, and our laser blows chilled air onto the area after every pulse to take the edge off. Sensitive spots such as the bikini line can feel a little sharper than, say, the legs, but the sessions are quick and the sensation passes the moment the laser lifts.
Not equally. The laser finds the pigment in the hair, so it does its best work on dark brown and black hair. Blonde, red, grey and white hairs hold very little melanin, and the laser struggles to see them. If that is the hair you want gone, our specialists will be honest about it and usually recommend advanced electrolysis, which treats each follicle one at a time regardless of colour.
Yes. This is exactly why we use a dual-wavelength system. The deeper Nd:YAG wavelength at 1064nm bypasses much of the surrounding pigment and targets the follicle, which makes it safe across darker Fitzpatrick tones where many older IPL devices are not. Your practitioner sets the settings to your skin at the consultation, and the patch test confirms it before we treat the full area.
For most people, a course of six to eight sessions gives the best, longest-lasting result, with each appointment spaced about six weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects follicles in their active phase, so the gap between sessions is what lets us catch more of them each time. You will see a reduction after the very first appointment.
It gives a long-lasting reduction rather than a promise that not a single hair will ever return. Once a course is complete, most people find the area stays smooth for a long time, with the odd fine hair appearing that an occasional maintenance session keeps in check. Hormonal changes can prompt new growth, which is worth knowing before you start.
Once a full course is complete, the smoothness tends to hold for years rather than weeks, which is the whole appeal over shaving and waxing. A handful of fine hairs may surface over time, and an occasional top-up session keeps them in check. Hormonal shifts, pregnancy or conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome can prompt fresh growth, so the result is best described as long-lasting rather than absolute.
You will notice a reduction after the very first session, and over the one to three weeks that follow, the treated hairs shed as they work their way out of the skin. The fuller result builds across the course, with each appointment thinning the regrowth further. Most people see the clearest difference by around the third or fourth session.
For anyone who has spent years shaving, waxing and battling ingrown hairs, the answer is usually yes. The cost of a course sits against a lifetime of razors, wax appointments and the daily bother of it all, and most patients tell us they wish they had started sooner. We always begin with a consultation so the plan and the price are set to your skin and hair before you commit to anything.
Keep things simple for the first day or two: skip hot baths, saunas, heavy exercise and exfoliation, and keep sunscreen on any exposed area. Mild redness usually settles within 24 to 48 hours, and a soothing session of LED light therapy can calm the skin if it feels a little reactive. Stay off sun and sunbeds between appointments so your skin is ready for the next session.
Yes. Shave the area the day before or the morning of your session so the surface hair is gone but the root is still in place for the laser to find. Do not wax, pluck or epilate in the weeks beforehand, because those methods pull the root out and leave the laser nothing to target.
Yes, and shaving is the one method we encourage between appointments. It removes the hair at the surface while leaving the root in place, so the follicle is still there for the laser to treat next time. Avoid waxing, plucking and epilating throughout your course, as those pull the root out and interrupt the results you are building.
No, not straight away. We cannot laser skin that has had direct sun or sunbed exposure in the four to six weeks before your appointment, as tanned skin raises the risk of a reaction. Fake tan has to be off for at least two weeks as well. Booking your course for autumn or winter is often the easiest way around this.
We do not treat during pregnancy. There is no firm evidence that the laser causes harm, but hormonal changes in pregnancy can alter both hair growth and skin sensitivity, so the sensible course is to wait until after your baby arrives and, if you are breastfeeding, until things have settled. Existing patients simply pause their course and pick it back up when the timing is right.
No. The laser targets pigment, and a tattoo is dense pigment, so passing the laser over it could fade, blur or even burn the ink. Your practitioner simply works around any tattoo and, where needed, covers it so it is never treated. Hair right up to the edge can still be dealt with safely.
Downtime is minimal, which is why the treatment fits so easily into a normal week. Some redness or mild soreness is common on the day and settles within 24 to 48 hours. Serious side effects are rare when a trained practitioner carries out the treatment, and the patch test at your consultation is there precisely to rule out any surprises.
We can treat from age 15 where there is a genuine medical reason. A parent or guardian must consent and be present at every appointment, and anyone under 18 sees a doctor or nurse before treatment begins. Get in touch and we will let you know whether we can help.
Wondering whether laser hair removal is right for your particular area, or what it costs in Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield? These are the questions we hear most about treating specific parts of the body, treating men, and pricing, including how memberships spread the cost of a full course.
Yes, and it is popular. Men’s laser hair removal in Birmingham works exactly the same way it does for women, and the most requested areas are the back, chest, shoulders and a neckline that grows too far down under the beard. The hair needs to be dark for the laser to target it well, and heavier growth simply tends to need a slightly longer course, which your practitioner will map out at the consultation.
Yes. Face laser hair removal is one of the most common requests we get, from a few stubborn hairs on the upper lip or chin to the full jaw and neck. Facial sessions are quick, and because the areas are small they are easy to fit around a working day. We keep well clear of the immediate eye area and treat everything else with the same cooled, careful technique.
You can. Full body laser hair removal in Birmingham is one of our most requested packages, and combining areas into one appointment usually saves both time and money compared with booking them separately. Every combination is quoted individually, so ask at your consultation or take a look at our price list to see how the areas fit together.
Waxing pulls the hair out but does nothing to stop it returning, so you are back every few weeks. Laser disables the follicle over a course, which is why the reduction lasts. Electrolysis also offers permanent removal and works on one follicle at a time, which makes our advanced electrolysis the better route for the fair, red or grey hairs the laser cannot see.
It usually helps a great deal. Ingrown hairs happen when hair curls back into the skin, and once the follicle is disabled there is far less hair to become trapped, so the bumps and irritation ease over a course. If ingrown hairs have left behind redness or brown marks, our excel V+ laser can even those out once your hair-removal course is underway.
Yes, and it is a natural pairing. If you are already lasering underarm hair, our miraDry treatment tackles excessive sweat in the same area, so many patients plan the two together. Your practitioner can talk you through the order and timing that suits your skin at the consultation.
Often, yes, and many patients do. Smooth skin tends to prompt a wish to improve its tone and texture too, so a course sits comfortably alongside a facial or a plan of medical grade skincare. Your practitioner will map out the order and timing at your consultation so nothing overlaps in a way that irritates the skin.
It can. Heavier growth, sometimes linked to a hormonal condition, still responds well to a course of laser, though you may need a few more sessions to keep on top of it. We assess this properly at your consultation and set realistic expectations, and where a medical cause seems likely we will suggest you have it looked into alongside your treatment.
Single areas start from £99 a session, and because most people want a full course of six to eight, we offer memberships from around £90 a month so the cost is spread rather than paid in one go. Larger and combined areas are quoted at your consultation. See the full price list or ask about our laser hair removal memberships.
