Micro-Needling Birmingham

At MediZen in Birmingham, micro-needling remains one of the treatments our patients return to most. It works with your own biology, prompting the skin to lay down fresh collagen and elastin. As a result, scarring softens, pores refine and the surface looks smoother and brighter.

Who is micro-needling for?

Micro-needling suits anyone who looks in the mirror and wishes their skin were smoother, clearer or a little more even. If acne has left behind pitted or textured scarring, this treatment can help. It also helps if fine lines are starting to show, or if enlarged pores and dull tone have crept in. It meets you where you are and rebuilds quality from within. It works across a wide range of skin tones and types, and it pairs naturally with a good home routine. That is why we so often plan it alongside medical-grade skincare.

Patients typically come to us at MediZen wanting help with one or more of the following:

  • Acne scarring and textured, uneven skin
  • Fine lines and early signs of ageing
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • Pigmentation, sun damage and dull tone
  • Stretch marks and body scars
  • Mild skin laxity on the face and neck

It is not the right choice for everyone, and we would rather tell you that at the consultation than after. If you have an active breakout, a cold sore, or certain skin conditions, we will wait. We give the skin time to settle first. Deep, tethered acne scars or more pronounced laxity sometimes respond better to radiofrequency micro-needling with Secret PRO. Your practitioner will say so honestly. Every plan begins with a face-to-face assessment. So, the depth, the number of sessions and the aftercare are matched to your skin rather than to a template.

What is micro-needling?

Micro-needling is a form of collagen induction. Using a sterile pen fitted with very fine needles, your practitioner creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. Each one is a tiny, controlled signal that tells the body to repair. In turn, repair means fresh collagen, elastin and growth factors delivered exactly where they are needed. Over the following weeks the skin remodels itself. As a result, scars flatten, texture refines and the surface takes on a healthier glow.

At MediZen we use a micro-needling pen rather than a dermal roller, and the distinction matters. A pen makes clean, vertical channels. It also lets the aesthetician change the depth as needed. That means moving from the thin skin around the eyes to the firmer skin of the cheek in one session. That control means less trauma at the surface, quicker healing and, in our experience, better results. It brings fewer side effects than rolling or more aggressive ablative treatments.

Because the treatment rebuilds the skin’s own scaffolding, it complements other collagen-focused work beautifully. Some patients layer it with Profhilo for deeper hydration and firmness. Meanwhile, those treating acne and acne scarring often combine it with a tailored skincare plan. What it is not is a one-off miracle. Collagen takes time to form, so a short course gives far better results than a single visit. We will always be straight with you about how many sessions your skin is likely to need.

Why micro-needling at MediZen

MediZen is led by Dr David Eccleston, and it is registered with the Care Quality Commission. That medical foundation shapes how every treatment is run, micro-needling included. Your session is carried out by an experienced MediZen aesthetician. You are in a clinic where training, hygiene and honest advice come first.

The reason MediZen reaches for a pen rather than a roller comes down to control. A pen lets the practitioner set one depth for the delicate skin around the eyes. A different depth suits the cheek, keeping each channel clean so the skin heals quickly. Micro-needling is not about doing something dramatic in a single afternoon. It is about giving the skin a reason to rebuild, then guiding it session by session.

That philosophy is why we plan micro-needling as a course and why we take clinical photographs along the way. In this way, progress is measured rather than guessed at. For an added lift in radiance before an event, we often combine a session with a HydraFacial. Dr Eccleston sits on the register of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. That standard of care runs through the whole team, whoever you see.

Micro-needling or radiofrequency micro-needling?

If you have been researching scarring or skin tightening, you have probably seen radiofrequency micro-needling mentioned alongside traditional micro-needling. Both create micro-channels to trigger collagen. So, here is an honest look at how they differ, and when we would steer you towards Secret PRO instead.

Your journey

What to expect at your appointment

01
Your consultation
Every micro-needling journey at MediZen begins face to face. We take a full medical history and talk through the concerns that brought you in. Then, we assess your skin properly before anything else. You will get a clear explanation of what the treatment can and cannot do for you. This comes with pricing, the likely number of sessions and any downtime. You will also get a personalised plan that usually includes the right skincare to support your results. If micro-needling is not the best route for you, we will say so and suggest what is.
02
Before your appointment
A little preparation protects your skin and improves the outcome. Avoid active skincare such as retinols and AHAs for three to five days beforehand. Also, do not exfoliate or pile on creams right before your visit. Leave at least two weeks after any anti-wrinkle or dermal filler treatment. Skip alcohol for twenty-four hours. Then, come with a clean, make-up-free face if we are treating the face. If you are prone to cold sores, let us know, as an antiviral may be advised.
03
During your treatment
Your treatment happens in three calm steps. First, numbing cream goes on for around thirty minutes so you stay comfortable. A hydrating serum is then massaged in to prime the skin. Next, your aesthetician passes the micro-needling pen slowly across the area, creating the fine channels that do the work. Finally, they work methodically over the whole zone in a circular motion, adjusting the depth as they go. You may feel light pressure, but it should not be painful. The time on the skin depends on the size of the area being treated.
04
Aftercare and results
Straight afterwards the skin looks flushed, much like mild sunburn, and that settles over a few hours. Some light flaking or shedding can follow over the next week as the skin renews. It is all easily managed with the aftercare products we recommend. You will have written aftercare in your confirmation email, and following it closely keeps downtime short and results strong. Fresh collagen forms gradually, so the real change appears over the weeks that follow, building session on session.

Micro-needling FAQs

Still weighing up micro-needling in Birmingham? These are the questions patients ask us most about the treatment itself, from comfort and safety to downtime and results. For questions about a specific concern or the cost, see the section just below.

Micro-needling is very safe when it is carried out by a trained professional in a clinical setting. At MediZen it is performed by experienced aestheticians in a Care Quality Commission registered, medically led clinic, and every treatment starts with a consultation and a full medical history so we can rule out anything that would make it unsuitable.

It should not be painful. We apply numbing cream for around thirty minutes beforehand, so most people feel only light pressure or a mild prickling sensation as the pen passes over the skin. If anything feels uncomfortable during your session, tell your practitioner and they will adjust.

Most people need a short course to see the full benefit, commonly around three sessions spaced a few weeks apart, though this depends on your skin and your goal. Collagen builds gradually, so a course almost always outperforms a single visit. Your practitioner will map out the right number for you at your consultation.

Downtime is short. Expect redness like mild sunburn for a few hours, and sometimes light flaking over the following days as the skin renews. Most patients are comfortable returning to normal life the next day, which is why we list recovery as one to two days.

Side effects are usually mild and short-lived: redness, a feeling of tightness, and occasional light crusting or shedding while the skin heals. Following your aftercare, which we send in writing, keeps these to a minimum. Serious reactions are rare when treatment is done properly, which is exactly why we insist on a consultation and a full medical history first.

The treatment itself is quick, though you should allow extra time for the numbing cream to take effect. In total, plan for around forty-five minutes to an hour in clinic. The time on the skin depends on the size of the area being treated.

A pen creates clean, vertical channels and lets your aesthetician change the needle depth across different parts of the face. A roller drags at a fixed angle and depth. The pen causes less surface trauma, heals faster and tends to give better, more even results, which is why we use one at MediZen.

You may notice a fresh glow within days, but the meaningful change appears over the following weeks as new collagen forms, and it continues to build across a course. Results are long-lasting, though skin keeps ageing, so many patients top up with occasional maintenance sessions or a medical-grade skincare routine to protect their investment.

Yes. Because micro-needling works by creating tiny channels rather than delivering heat or light, it is generally considered safe across the full range of skin tones, including deeper ones that can be sensitive to some laser treatments. Your practitioner will still assess your skin and history at the consultation and set the depth to suit you.

We do not carry out micro-needling during pregnancy or while you are breastfeeding. It is a sensible precaution rather than a sign of any specific danger, and it means the active skincare that supports the treatment can be used without restriction later. We are always happy to plan a course for once you are ready.

There is no strict upper age limit, and we treat patients from their twenties into their seventies and beyond. What matters is the health of your skin and what you would like to change, not the number on your birthday. For cosmetic concerns we do not treat anyone under eighteen.

Keep the skin clean, hydrated and protected. For the first day or two, avoid make-up, heat, heavy exercise and active ingredients such as retinol or acids, and stick to a gentle cleanser with the aftercare products we provide. A good medical-grade skincare routine protects your results and helps the skin recover more comfortably. Full written aftercare arrives in your confirmation email.

We ask you to leave make-up off for at least twenty-four hours so the tiny channels can close and the skin can settle. Most people are comfortable wearing mineral make-up again the following day. Give it a little longer if the skin still feels sensitive.

Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight for a week or two, so keep direct sun to a minimum and wear a high-factor SPF every day. Sun protection is one of the simplest ways to safeguard the collagen you have just worked to build. We will talk you through the right products at your appointment.

For texture, mild scarring, fine lines and dull tone, most patients feel it is money well spent, particularly over a short course where the improvement builds visibly. It is a natural, injection-free way to lift skin quality using your own collagen. If deeper hydration is your main goal, some people prefer or add Profhilo, and we will give you an honest steer at the consultation.

During an initial course, sessions are usually spaced around four to six weeks apart to give collagen time to form. After that, many patients return for a maintenance session every few months to keep their results topped up. Your practitioner will suggest a rhythm that suits your skin and your budget.

They do different jobs, so the better choice depends on your concern. Micro-needling rebuilds collagen and is strong on texture and scarring, while chemical peels resurface the top layers and lift tone and dullness. Many patients get the best result by combining the two in a planned order rather than choosing one over the other.

Yes. As well as the face, we treat the neck, décolletage and the backs of the hands, and micro-needling can help soften stretch marks and body scars too. The approach is the same, with the depth adjusted for the area. Your practitioner will confirm what is suitable at your consultation.

By concern

Micro-needling for your concern and costs

Wondering whether micro-needling is right for your concern, or what it will cost? Here are the questions we hear most about treating acne scars, fine lines, pigmentation and texture, along with pricing and how it combines with other treatments.

Yes. Micro-needling is one of the most effective treatments for pitted and textured acne scarring, because it prompts the skin to rebuild collagen in the scarred area over a course of sessions. If you are still getting active breakouts, we would usually calm those first, sometimes with a laser option such as AviClear, before focusing on the scars.

It can. By boosting your own collagen and elastin, micro-needling softens early fine lines and improves overall firmness and texture. It works especially well as part of a longer skin-quality plan rather than a single fix, and it suits patients who want a natural improvement without injections.

Micro-needling supports a more even tone by encouraging skin renewal, and it can improve the look of sun damage and uneven pigmentation over time. For stubborn pigmentation we often combine it with the right skincare, and your practitioner will advise whether needling alone is enough or whether another approach would serve you better.

Yes. As collagen firms the skin around each pore, pores can look tighter and the surface smoother and more refined. Texture is one of the concerns patients are happiest with after a course, and it is a common reason people book in the first place.

The pen lets us work carefully in delicate areas, so micro-needling can help freshen crepey under-eye skin. For under-eye concerns that call for more targeted regeneration, we may suggest pairing it with polynucleotides, and we will talk this through at your consultation.

Micro-needling starts from £250 per session, with course pricing confirmed for you at consultation. It is also included in our skin membership from £180 per month. See our memberships and packages or the full price list for details.

Yes, and many patients do. It pairs well with a HydraFacial for instant radiance, with chemical peels for tone and texture, and with Profhilo for deeper hydration and firmness. Your practitioner will build a plan in the right order so each treatment supports the next.
